These 3-speed bikes are the best. Kids coming from a single speed bike need to learn gears, but going straight to multiple derailleur type gears creates a steep learning curve - learning how to use them and coordinating shifting while pedalling.
A 3-speed internally geared bike like this one allows them to get their head around using gears, but they can shift even when not moving - so one less thing to coordinate.
They're also low maintenance, using a hefty single speed chain and so derailleur to bend out of shape accidentally!
